Shave Ice - Waikoloa Forum

Waikoloa or Kona?Where is your favorite Shave Ice spot on the Kohala Coast area? Also a place in Kona and HIlo. Wilson's By the Bay is a popular spot in Hilo. Its right down Bay Front, so very accessible if you're just passing through Hilo. I can't speak to Kona or the Kohala Coast.

The only spot I know on Kohala coast is Anuenue at Kawaihae. I can't speak to the shave ice quality, never ordered it, but their ice cream is delicious so the shave ice is likely good too. We had some shave ice last week from the Anuenue in Kawaihae mentioned above - it was decent, but not as light or fluffy as I have had in Kauai or North Shore Oahu.

Scandinavian Shave ice in Kailua is awesome. A few years back they closed down, then came under new ownership. One of the things that make their shave ice a little different, is they don't pack down and form the ice before they put on the flavors. They have to pat it down a little for it to stay together, but it's still at least twice the finished size prior to putting on the flavor.

Once the syrup is on, then they pack it all together. This helps the flavor get all the way through and you don't get "dry" white ice in the middle.

And the flavors don't seem to "run" together as quickly either. They get my top vote for shave ice on the BI. This is why I've never tried the shave ice at Anuenue. Why would I ever choose shave ice when I can have fabulous ice cream? It's all sugar. But to each their own, same with malasadas, I have no clue why they have an almost cult following.

Re malasadas -- If I'm going to eat something with an obscene amount of calories, I'd rather have the subtle flavors of some lilikoi cheesecake or a chocolate molten lava cake than a fried ball of dough. Me too on the malasadas. I tried a couple and although they were fresh, I just didn't get excited. Cheesecake or a nice piece of chocolate cake with chocolate icing will make my tummy happy. Big Island Spectacular Helicopter Tour. Onaona G. Re: Shave Ice.I'm staying in a condo in Waikoloa for 5 days and in Volcano for 2. During the stay in Waikoloa I'll be heading to Costo to stock up on food and essentials and probably stop by a few places in Kona for plate lunches and take out food that's a thread in itself I'm sure. I'm looking for some good shaved ice places which are relatively easy to get to i.

Any good places to consider on the way or within Hilo - Kawate? You might be able to kill two birds by going to Kawaihae. Shave ice for sure, at Anuenue, the hole in the wall on the upper level of the center. Last time I stopped there, I saw a plate lunch place between the diner and Tres Hombres, but it wasn't open at the time.

Businesses often come and go there, but it wasn't more than a month ago IIRC. I think Scandinavian closed.

Put it in the search bar and you should find the topic, pretty recent. Shave Ice on Hilo bayfront, down near the righthand end as you face the shops, opposite end from Cafe Pesto.

Hawaiian Style Cafe in Waimea serves lots of food. I used to go to the plate lunch place in the Matsuyama's Market shopping center, on the upper highway, just south of Kaiiminani the steep road that comes up near the airport through Kona Palisades. Not sure if you would be on the upper highway, or if it's still any good, but it you go by it, check it out. I don't think there is such a thing as the "best shave ice" since, after all, it's just shave ice with flavoring poured over the ice and all these companies use the same bottled flavorings.

Scandinavian Shave Ice is closed. It was sold a few weeks ago but the new owners did not open it yet. It is next to the minimart, upstairs on the other side from Cafe Pesto. Parking lot.

Best shaved ice - Driving to Hilo or to Kona - Waikoloa Forum

I like it for the fine texture of the shaved ice block, the generous but not ridiculous portion, and the fresheness of the syrup flavors. Also that it seems family run. At least, it's been teh same fellow as long as I've been going thereI know someone recently asked the question about shaved ice in Kona - but I haven't been back to Kona in 9 years and we're going back next week.

There is a shaved ice place we use to go to in town that had a great big rainbow shaved ice statue in front I remember because I still have the picture of me standing in front of it. My husband says it's across the street from the " great big tree" in Kona whatever that means. Right downtown. You posted in the Waikoloa forum - are you staying north of Kona? If so, also check out Anuenue hole in the wall on mauka side of Kawaihae Center, and Tropical Dreams ice cream and shave ice in Hawi.

A small difference, but you'll sound a more seasoned visitor if you know it. Anuenue is excellent and reliable-same guy had been shaving my shave ices for years and years. I think it's family run. If you are in the Waikoloa area, it's closer than Scandanavian.

Carretto siciliano for sale

And better, in my opinion. Nice shave texture, good syrup technique. Too much gets it yucky--so there is an art to multiflavored ices. Thanks for the tips guys!!! I am staying in the Waikoloa area Hilton Waikoloa so I will be on the lookout that place you posted. Ok - my husband wants to know And about how far up the road would it be? If you are venturing into the Costco From my observation Go to the intersection with the road to Waimea, go left to Kawaihae.

The strip of stores is on the left at the junction where the road goes to Hawi or down to the waterfront. About 19 miles. Once you find the stores, Pesto is on the bottom level ground level on the side where the little road goes to the boat launch ana a convenience store and Anuenue are on the upper level ground level on the side where the road goes to Hawi. OK - so we're back from Kona.

We had a wonderful time - lots of changes since I was there 9 years ago! That place was great. We went there almost every day. I miss it already Skip to main content. Log in to get trip updates and message other travellers. Shaved Ice. Watch this Topic. Browse forums All Browse by destination.

Although it was cold and refreshing on a warm afternoon, it was basically a snow one, not the fluffy stuff shave ice is supposed to be. This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity. Halii Kai Resort at Waikoloa Beach.Where is your favorite Shave Ice spot on the Kohala Coast area? Also a place in Kona and HIlo. I have never got excited about malasadas, until I had the lilikoi malasadas at Ulu. They're mostly lilikoi custard but with a small, sugary crusty pillow of heaven around it.

Crowdvox

Yes, I would expect the Ulu variant to be delicious! I could salivate over what you described here. Bradda Pops are similar to Otter Pops, but less sugary and more fruity li hing mui! I think they are made in Hilo or Keau. They are very popular for fundraising. I would guess for some of us the excitement about shave ice and malasadas is the same reason that Cheesecake Factory CF in Waikiki is so popular - because you can't get it at home! I have a CF less than 2 miles from my house.

We would never think about eating at one in Hawaii when there are so many other great options. Yet some folks who don't have a CF near them can't wait to have a meal there.

So, I think malasadas and shave ice are the same. I eat one or two each visit. We visit once or twice a year. It's a treat that I don't get at home, and I associate it with Hawaii.

My Hawaiian Vacation: The Big Island

Mac nuts are a little different. I can get many of the same national brands here at home, but I don't. I only allow myself that treat when in Hawaii and the scale and my clothes thank me for that sacrifice. Ice cream on the other hand I do have at home. That would not stop me from having ice cream in Hawaii, but I don't really think about it as a Hawaii treat even if some brands can only be found in the Islands.

I understand that, and that is probably why malasadas and shave ice are not important to me. I can get them any time, but they're not that awesome to me. Anunue's ice cream with Tahitian vanilla, Kona coffee, and tropical flavors, is not something I can even get on the east side, not at all in Northern California. I think local made lilikoi cheesecake is pretty special, lilikoi anything, even though I live here and grow lilikoi. It's just a flavor that I really love and don't get tired of.

Actually, mac nuts have highly heart beneficial oils in them, and they are good for us as long as they aren't smothered in sodium. I see your point, FirstPlace. I'm the same way about mai-tais.
